Contact Information: Phone: 423-902-3399 Course Description:
This course is a study of polynomials, exponents, matrices, functions, an introduction to trigonometry and the extension of the number system to the complex numbers. It covers the graphing of systems of linear equations, inequalities, absolute values, quadratics, and other polynomials. Every student can learn math. It is my belief that all students have the right to learn in the best environment possible. I also believe that every person is responsible for his or her actions and will be held accountable. It is my goal to maintain a learning environment of mutual respect, free of criticism and fear. Grade Categories:
Your overall grade will be based on the following:
Homework - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 25%
Tests and Quizzes (Including the final) - - - - 50%
Attendance and Participation- - - - - - - - - - - 25%
Advice: If you work to really learn the material, your grade will take care of itself. Semester Grade Formula:
Semester Grade %=(HW,Notebook %)*.25+
(Test/Quiz%)*.5+(Part/Att%)*.25
Homework: Homework will be assigned and collected almost daily. Math is a subject that builds upon itself. The tools and skills covered in each lesson needs to be practiced to be mastered. As a student, you need to continually ask yourself, "Do I understand what I'm doing? Why am I doing it and what information is needed to use this method?" If you can answer these questions for each topic covered, your grade will take care of itself. You need to plan to spend time everyday on your homework. There may be problems that are unusually difficult that I have not prepared you for. In this case, you need to write down what you know, what you have tried, and the questions you will ask me the next day that will get you going on the problem. If you have shown this effort, and written this information on your homework page, it will be graded according to your effort and your explanation. Label the top right hand corner of each assignment:
First and Last Names
Class Title and Period #
Page # and Problem #’s
Homework is graded on completion. Each problem must be documented. Important information must be copied down and work must be shown. Do not use answer columns. The problem, the work, and the answer should all be shown neatly together. Assignments, which are turned in on time, with documentation on every problem, and have over 70% correct, will receive 5 out of 5 points. Assignments that are turned in after the due date, due to excused absences, will receive 5 out of 5 points IF turned in within the allotted time frame. Students that get less than 70% correct, but turn it in complete, documented, and on time will receive 4 out of 5 points. Assignments that are turned in after the due date, due to excused absences, will receive 4 out of 5 points (unless the student corrects the paper and verifies that they received a 70% or better). Students have one day, for every excused day absent, to turn in work for full credit. Assignments turned in late, will received 3 out of 5 points. Assignments turned in on time but without documentation on EVERY problem will receive 3 out of 5 points. Assignments turned in late and without documentation on every problem will receive 2 out of 5 points. No late work is accepted after the end of the day on which it was collected. Students who receive a 4 on an assignment may redo the missed problems correctly and turn it back in before the test is taken on that chapter and I will raise their score to a 5 out of 5. Students who receive a 3 on an assignment due to missing documentation may show the required work and turn it back in before the test is taken on that chapter and I will raise their grade to a 4 out of 5. Participation/Attendance: Each student receives 6 points a day for participation, preparation, and attendance. Daily points are deducted every time a student is absent, tardy, unprepared for class, or needs to be reminded to get back on task. Tests and Quizzes: You will not be allowed to retake tests or quizzes. Therefore, it is very important to be prepared ahead of time. However, I realize that even with preparation sometimes we can have a bad day, therefore I drop your lowest test of the quarter if it improves your grade. I will allow you to use your daily notes on quizzes, therefore it is very important to keep that part of your notebook neat and organized. |
